DRIVE YOUR SPECTRUM

For those who want to enjoy getting to know their Spectrum, here is a book which concentrates on getting results - learning to program by actually making things happen.

A section to basic essentials is follower by colour, graphics and sound - these are easy to use, so everyone can see immediate and worthwhile results. The programs are useful and fun.

Building up progressively from small beginnings, the way they are entered develops programming knowedge and technique, and highlights possible problems and their solutions, keeping the programmer where he should be - in the driving seat.

GAMES OF ACTION AND EXCITEMENT

FOR YOUR SPECTRUM

Banish boredom for weeks to come - enter the spectrum world of action and excitement

The ZX Spectrum's remarkable capabilities and features make it a natural games-playing micro. In this book, Andrew Nelson shows you how to make the most of those features and how to program and play 20 great games featuring animation, video excitement and non-stop action.

You must
  • Defend your home town from the green menace in DELTA
  • Save the falling people in CATCH ME
  • Get hte aliens in your sights in SPACE WARS
  • Destroy the PODZ WITH YOUR LASER
  • Stop the grabbers from stealing the fuel pods in RIPPER and more
Your Spectrum will never have been livelier

MASTER YOUR ZX MICRODRIVE
programs, machine code and networking

Master the ZX Microdrive contains all the information you will ever need to use the ZX Microdrive to the full. Clearly explained, with many examples, it is equally suitable for the relative newcomer to BASIC through to the experienced machine code programmer.

The fundamentals of strams and channels are explained. There is a major section devoted to file handling which explains many features normally only available on disc based machines, including the creation of program files from BASIC.

The book also includes a major database program for use with the microdrive and a chapter explaining how to protect programs. As well as microdrive the two other features of the ZX Interface 1 are explained - the RS232 port and networking.

Extensive details are given about how to use the RS232 as a network for machine code including explanations of the major ROM routines. A program that adds easy to use commands for the microdrive is included with a full explanation of how to add more of your own.

Master your ZX Microdrive is the definitive guide for users.

Andwer Pennell is a university student, freelance programmer and a regular contributor to Popular Computing Weekly.

SINCLAIR ZX SPECTRUM
Microdrive and Interface 1 manual

THE ZX INTERFACE 1 ...
incorporates the three functions of Microdrive controller, local area network and RS232 Interface. Connect it to your Spectrum and you can control up to eight Microdrives, communicate with other computers and drive a wide range of printers.

THE ZX MICRODRIVE ...
gives you fast access to a large memory. Each Microdrive can hold up to 100K bytes using a single interchangeable cartridge.

THIS MANUAL ...
introduces the idea of using BASIC as an operating system as well as a programming language. This way, BASIC can be used to set up communication links, to send and receive data along them and to manipulate files. This adds enormously to it's power to perform tasks in which:
  - data is stored and retrieved,
  - data and programs are sent to peripherals,
  - communication links are established with other Spectrum computers or with other types of computer.

OVER THE SPECTRUM

"Final entrant in the Spectrum stakes is Melbourne House's OVER THE SPECTRUM, and for me it runs out the clear winner.

Not a teach-yourself-programming guide, it is a collection of programs: each program has a detailed breakdown of exactly what happens when and how it's all achieved.

The listings are not trivial, and the result is well woth the effort. The book is liberally illustrated in colour showing screen displays for almost all the programs so you know what you are trying to achieve at the outset.

As a demonstration of what can be achieved using the Spectrum's User Defined Characters this book cannot be faulted, and although it contains no programming hints as such, a diligent reader is going to learn a lot about the Spectrum by working his or her way through it.

Take a bow gents, and give us more."

PROGRAMMING ARCADE GAMES

FOR YOUR SPECTRUM

Thousands of different programs are now available for the Spectrum home computer, and more enter the shops every day; the majority of these programs being super-fast, machine code arcade games. Most Spectrum users have an interest in arcade games of one form or another, and this book sets out to provide a deeper insight into the workings and production of arcade simulations in BASIC.

This book has been written in two sections which go together to form a complete background to the writing of arcade games. It starts by looking at exactly what an arcade game is, and progresses by studying various techniques usd in their development and production. This is followed by an in-depth look at more sophisticated methods of programming, including a brief look at how machine code can be used to speed up and improve the programs.

THE SPECTRUM OPERATING SYSTEM

This book will be a valuable asset to all Spectrum owners. There is wealth of material enabling you to employ versatile techniques which are normally the domain of the professional. The author shows how short machine code routines can be written and used very easily. A number of programs which are ready to type in are also included.

For the machine code programmer, this book will be a constant source of reference. Instead of 're-inventing the wheel' for each new program, the author shows you how to make full use of ROM routines and the existing facilities.

Both the Spectrum and the microdrive interface are covered, and there is a detailed description of extending the operating system for microdrive users.

The Author
Steve Kramer has been workinf with computer for twelve years. He acts as an independent software consultant to a number of software houses in the field of business applications. He is also the author of several games and home-use programs written for popular micros.

SPECTRUM SHADOW ROM DISASSEMBLY

In SPECTRUM SHADOW ROM DISASSEMBLY Gianluca Carri provides a disassembled listing of the Shadow ROM in the ZX Interface 1 for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, as well as numerous example programs which use hte facilities provided by the Shadow ROM to extend the Spectrums BASIC. These extensions will enable both BASIC and machine code programmers to get the most out of their ZX Interface 1.

The first part of the book discusses the ZX Interface 1 Shadow ROM and shows how to extend BASIC with several new and useful commands. These include an improved EDIT command, pseudo-random-access file handling, enhanced commands for the RS232 channel and READ/WRITE Microdrive files. All examples are given with fully commented assembler listings, and a BASIC loader program is provided for those without an assembler.

The second part of the book presents a complete, fully commented, disassembly of Shadow ROM routines for restart, control and syntax checking. A full disassembly of the code controlling the RS232 link, the local network and the ZX Microdrives is also given.

An extensive appendix provides a quick-reference guide to subroutine entry points and nwe system variables. The differences between Issue 1 and Issue 2 Shadow ROMs are discussed and there is an index to routines. SPECTRUM SHADOW ROM DISASSEMBLY takes you out of the dark and puts you right in the picture.
